Happy Labor Day/Labour Day weekend to all our American and Canadian readers. It's been a tough week for Texas, but the response to Hurricane Harvey has been impressive and, as Mark reflected, a welcome contrast with Katrina.
Meanwhile, in case you missed it, here's how the last seven days looked to Steyn:
~The week began with Mark celebrating the 40th anniversary of an American anthem ...and the man conducting its instantly recognizable intro.
~On Monday Steyn mused on "The Mood Music of Mohammed": It was our most-read piece of the week.
~On Tuesday Mark examined the ongoing assault on western history in "The Totalitarianism of the Now".
~On Wednesday, for his midweek appearance on "Tucker Carlson Tonight", Steyn discussed the latest developments in the Democrats' strange scandal with Pakistani computer aides, and then moved on to play Hillary's forthcoming book tour strictly for laughs. Click below to watch:
~Thursday marked the twentieth anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Mark republished some of his thoughts at the time, and some of his second thoughts. He returned to the subject of Diana, plus Hillary and Harvey and more, on the radio with John Oakley in Toronto. Click below to listen:
~On Friday Steyn rounded out the week with a consideration of the violence on American streets, the respectable types who romanticize it, and the terror to come.
~This weekend we launched the latest in our series of audio adventures, Tales for our Time: This time Mark's reading Joseph Conrad's classic story of a protean terrorist cell in the heart of the west, The Secret Agent. Our earlier adaptations - Conan Doyle's The Tragedy of the Korosko and H G Wells' The Time Machine - were both big hits with Mark Steyn Club members, and this new serialization looks as if it will be, too. You can find Part One here, and Part Two here. Tales for Our Time is made possible through the support of members of The Mark Steyn Club. For more on the Club, see below.
~For our Saturday movie date, and with the devastation in Texas in mind, Mark picked one of his favorite movies about the Lone Star State: The Last Picture Show.
All of our content at SteynOnline is made possible through the support of members of The Mark Steyn Club. Don't worry, none of our regular features are being paywalled, or anything like that. But we are providing Club members with a few extras, including our new newsletter, The Clubbable Steyn, and Tales for Our Time. Club member Elizabeth Hoerning writes:
So glad to hear your voice narrating another wonderful tale. Missed it the past couple of months. Your Korosko was wonderful - you're a one-man band of character impersonations, without ever a touch of mockery of the characters you impersonate. Look forward to hearing the rest of The Secret Agent.
