The week began with Thanksgiving in Canada and Columbus Day in America. But in Europe, on this Columbus Day, it's the Old World that's being re-made into a New World.
~On Monday Steyn marked the centenary of Harry "Sweets" Edison, master of the trumpet mute, with "The End Of A Love Affair".
~On Tuesday, Mark saluted Mrs Thatcher on what would have been her 90th birthday. Speaking of commanding female leaders, none was in evidence at that night's presidential debate, although various Democrat beta-males did their best to make Hillary look like one.

~On Thursday Mark kept his weekly date on The Hugh Hewitt Show to discuss Obama foreign policy - or rather the vacuum created thereby.
~On Friday Steyn considered the scandal of George Mason University's Big Climate racketeers, and the alarmists' ever more open contempt for democracy. The latest thuggery from climate totalitarians also provided fodder for Mark's most-read piece of the week.
~We like to lighten up at the weekend. So our latest Sinatra Century song celebrated "The Best Is Yet To Come". And, just ahead of Monday's Canadian election, Steyn's Saturday movie feature considered the eroticism of car crashes.
In a further casualty of the war on free speech, it turns out Mark can't even get a table at a Copenhagen trattoria, but, as Douglas Murray reflected, freedom has always been defended by a few. That's something to bear in mind as Steyn, John Roskam and Chris Berg's new book marks the 800th annniversary of Magna Carta.
