The week began with Europe under siege from all those "refugees". As Mark put it, what's to stop them walking across the Continent and taking it?
~Monday was Labor Day in the US and Labour Day in Canada. Steyn marked the occasion with a Sinatra song for the season, and a contemplation of a world without work.
~On Tuesday Mark joined Sean Hannity on Fox News to discuss the Clinton campaign's announcement that, following extensive poll-testing, Hillary is planning to be more spontaneous.
~On Wednesday Her Majesty The Queen pipped her great-great-grandmother Victoria to become the longest-reigning sovereign in the history of her various realms. Steyn saluted a great survivor and suggested that the trick to monarchy is not queening it.
~On Thursday Mark returned to the Ricochet podcast for the first time in a couple of years. The result was a zippy hour-long interview on everything from Bernie Sanders to environmentally friendly malodorousness. While promoting his new book, Steyn did a lot of radio this week: in Chicago, he offered his thoughts on bipartisan extremists, and with Hugh Hewitt he noted that, while predictions of Trump imploding have failed to come to pass, there seems to be an awful lot of imploding going on elsewhere.
~Friday marked 14 years since "the day everything changed" - when a man in an Afghan cave pulled off the bloodiest terrorist attack in American history. Mark found it a dispiriting anniversary, and suggested that, in fact, far too little had changed. He also considered another grim milestone: the tenth anniversary of the Mohammed cartoons, and our willingness to trade core liberties in hopes of a quiet life.
~September 11th was also the 90th birthday of one of America's great lyricists, Alan Bergman. We celebrated with one of his early hits for Sinatra, "Nice 'n' Easy". And for our Saturday movie date we continued in a 9/11 vein with the burqa pic Kandahar.
