~An interesting photograph has surfaced of returning war hero Bowe Bergdahl and one of his captors, the eponymous Haqqani hotshot Badar'udin Haqqani. Believers regard infidels as unclean - that's why at Guantanamo each new detainee's Koran is presented to him by guards wearing gloves and carrying the holy book suspended in a surgical mask, because as part of our full-service abasement before our enemies we accept their proposition that we are filthy. So it's interesting to see young Haqqani getting all touchy-feeling with "Sergeant" Bergdahl.
The Haqqani are the toughest terrorists in Afghanistan, and the Obama Administration thought Badar'udin a big enough threat to drone him in 2012. Prior to deserting, "Sergeant" Bergdahl wrote that "I am ashamed to be an American", which apparently is no obstacle to getting your family a Rose Garden photo-op with the President. The question is how far that shame carried him.
~Speaking of the ever blurring lines between infidel and believer, Blazing Cat Fur spots this interesting and revealing contribution to a debate in the House of Lords:
CHRISTIANS should be encouraged to marry Muslims as a way of tackling Islamophobia, a senior peer claimed today.
Lord Scott, a former Supreme Court Judge, cited his own family - in which two of his four children married Muslims - as an example of how interfaith families can thrive.
The peer, who sits as a crossbencher in the Lords, made the comments during a debate on how to improve relations between the Muslim community and other faith groups in the UK.
He said: "Of my two sons one has become a Muslim and of my two daughters one of those has become a Muslim, and I have 12 lovely grandchildren, seven of whom are little Muslims...
"I do just wonder that if an improvement is needed between the faith groups, one way of promoting that might be to encourage interfaith marriages."
But they're not "interfaith", are they? As one Daily Express commenter puts it:
Both examples above resulted in non-Muslims converting to Islam.
Indeed. So Lord Scott's solution to "Islamophobia" is for people to become Muslim. His own family is an instructive lesson in where this leads:
Gram'pa Scott's generation: 0 per cent Muslim;
The Scott children's generation: 50 per cent Muslim;
The Scott grandchildren's generation: 58.33 per cent Muslim (so far).
Spending so much of my time in court in recent years, I am wearily familiar with the low quality of supposed jurists. But this guy Scott is supposed to be one of the most eminent judges in the United Kingdom, so he must surely know that what he is advocating is not an "interfaith" solution at all but the remorseless surrender of one faith (or, at any rate, one nominal, residual cultural inheritance) to another.
It would have been heartening if one of his fellow peers had pointed this out.
The Bergdahl route is the express lane, but Lord Scott's path leads to exactly the same destination.
