Our apologies for the downed website yesterday evening (Eastern time). We came under a DOS attack. It wasn't as fatal as the other big June 28th attack - the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo one hundred years ago: perhaps the most consequential gunshot in history.
Here's the rest of this last week as seen by Mark:
~He kicked things off with a musical postscript to the Steyn children's graduation season, and some much needed advice in these glum times.
~On Monday Mark looked back on his visit to Iraq 11 years ago, and distilled America's defeat there into a single image.
~On Tuesday he reviewed the IRS Commissioner's contemptuous behavior before Congress and, in what became our most-read post of the week, considered the remorseless merger of the ruling party and the permanent bureaucracy.
~On Wednesday Mark started the day with Toronto's Number One morning man John Oakley. They covered a wide range of topics from environmentalist hypocrisy to Iraq to CBC privatization.
~Thursday saw the US soccer team play Germany in the World Cup. Steyn marked the occasion by recalling, from the 2002 tournament, the last US-German showdown.
~On Friday Mark pondered the Clinton family's problems in explaining their sudden wealth.
~On the environmental front, the big headline of the week was "EPA Employees Told to Stop Pooping in the Hallway", which Mark managed to tie to the forthcoming Mann vs Steyn case. He also connected the systemic corruption at the IRS to his fundraising efforts for the upcoming trial. We hope readers will now understand why Mark has chosen to fight the climate mullahs via sales from the Steyn store, and why we're so grateful for your continued support.
~What do Shia LaBeouf and Steyn have in common? They've both given memorable performances in Cabaret. Unfortunately, Mr LaBeouf's was from the seats, and was not appreciated by his fellow theatregoers, whereas Mark's got rave reviews - as he explained in a weekend reprise of his conversation with the show's writers, Kander and Ebb.
A new week at SteynOnline begins tonight with our Song of the Week.
