~He started the week with "Moonglow", a classic song that for a few decades was in danger of being reduced to half a song, and with an important development on the upcoming Mann vs Steyn trial of the century that became our most-read piece of the week. To push back against Dr Mann's assault on free speech, Mark has retained the legal team behind the most consequential piece of free-speech legislation this century. ~On Monday Mark considered another freedom-of-expression showdown: the University of California Professor of Sex Work Studies who doubles as free-speech commissar and campus security guard.
~On Tuesday Tony Abbott, the Queen's Prime Minister Down Under, reintroduced Australian knighthoods. By comparison, Barack Obama, the citizen-executive of a republic of limited government, arrived in Brussels for a one-day visit accompanied by 900 courtiers and a 45-car motorcade.
~Our evolving language was a theme of the week. On Wednesday, Mark noted that "homosexuality" is out. Also: the word "university" has been stripped of meaning, and "insurance" no longer insures against catastrophe, it is the catastrophe.
~On Thursday, in a much-read piece on the paramilitarization of American policing, Steyn looked at how Kansas kops are taking tea-party targeting to a whole other level.
~On Friday, as an apéritif for the weekend, Mark presented an unexpurgated video of his recent speech in Ottawa: "The Facts of Life are Conservative."
~On the Mann vs Steyn front, the BBC hosted a debate on whether we should be permitted to debate climate science. The participants were Dr Judith Curry and a bloke who thinks only experts should be allowed to discuss the subject. Everyone else should be arrested.
~It was a relief to turn to our Saturday movie feature: a centenary celebration of Alec Guinness, an actor at ease with a coronet - and a light saber. But, because it was Earth Hour, we turned the light saber off.
