After a week off the grid, I was very sad upon my return to learn of the death of Chicago's legendary morning man Don Wade. Those of us in the business of promoting our wares divide radio shows into those we do because we're desperate to sell our books and the far smaller number we'd do if we had nothing to sell just because they're a hoot to be on. Don & Roma fell into the latter category. Their slogan - the most positive, optimistic show on the radio - wasn't the most obvious fit with my brand of apocalyptic despair, but I loved my appearances with them.
This photo dates from 2007, when I was living at the InterContinental in Chicago for a few months, and had Don & Roma as my morning wake-up call. A year ago, ill health ended Don's near three-decade reign as WLS morning man but I always hoped he'd be back. I shall miss his good cheer enormously. Rest in peace.
