Hi Andrew,
My wife and I along with another couple who been good friends with me and my wife for the past 50 plus years are planning a trip to Newfoundland in the July timeframe with stopover day trips on the way there to Niagra Falls and coming home to Portland Maine.
Anything coming from Trudeau lately we should watch out for that might restrict on our freedom or result in jail time?
P.S. If you have any good tips on accommodations, meals, sights, we're all ears.

Dear Andrew,
Thank you for stepping in to keep the Clubland conversation going. I appreciate how you, Laura, and other hosts bring your own perspectives to the conversation.
Earlier this year, Mark acknowledged the passing of musician Denny Laine. Two days before Mr. Laine passed away, Canadian musician Myles Goodwyn also left us. I'm old enough to remember when April Wine was regularly on Canadian radio and touring along with many other Canadian performers during the 70s and 80s.
My question is: Do you think these bands would have done better or worse if there had not been Canadian content requirements to make space for them? Since the internet wasn't around, there were far fewer ways to hear these groups and in hindsight, providing some level of protection against a very large and established American music system gave the Canadian bands a chance to grow.
CanCon now seems to be a futile effort despite the recent Federal attempts to restrict news and entertainment options for Canadians on the internet.
Warm Regards,
Bill

Hello Andrew! Thank you and the entire Steyn team for another wonderful cruise. The "sun" and "sea" part is always a welcome distraction from the "civilizational collapse" aspect of the Steynian journeys. At last week's on board book signing, Mark was kind enough to refer to me as his "favorite Montenegrin brigand." This leads to my question: on the next Steyn cruise, would it be possible to provide at least an introductory survival course, perhaps calling it "Brigandry 101"? If civilizational collapse is actually right around the corner, aren't we all going to need—in one quick hurry—some new skills?

There were many an interesting discussion over dinner during the Cruise. One I remember was the issue of contemporary Americans maybe not always being treated fairly on the basis of their political leanings, ethnicity or even gender by the courts, bureaucracy, employers, etc. One has to keep perspective, it was stated, and remember how much worse thing were in this regard, particularly for Black Americans so many years ago. There was for instance that awful Dred Scott case, when Chief Justice Taney couldn't bring himself to recognize that Black Americans had rights that others "were bound to respect". Even after the Civil War there were times and places that a Black citizen could not even count on the Law to protect his very person, when lynching was practiced sometimes with impunity and even cases that went to trial were overturned by jury nullification. Thankfully that monster state of affairs is long dead (no matter what BLM may honk) and today's Americans are much more secure under the Law. But will it always be so?

Dear Andrew,
Why does the west play by a different set of rules than the rest of the world? Israel/Gaza is a prime example of this. No one argues Hamas attacked, kidnapped, rape, and kills Israelis yet Israel is accused of genocide. Why do we fall into the trap of having to allow our societies to become the very ones that teach such hate towards Israel. Surrendering our values for those who wish to destroy us hasn't worked out anywhere in the western world but they insist this is being welcoming. What say you Andrew?

Hi, Andrew,
Sorry we missed the cruise this year. Sounds like it was another rollicking time.
A quick note to Frank G., Niagara Falls is one heck of a side trip to Newfoundland. I would recommend the Maid of the Mist or Hornblower boats to the foot of the Falls. Best way to feel the Falls.
My question, similarly to the UK, in Canada we are seeing the "pro-Palestine" protesters bullying the police forces into submission. Is there a way to fix this, or are we too far gone?

Welcome back to the saddle, Mark. We've missed you.
I enjoyed your assessment of the U.S. military yesterday, though you could have widened the focus to include their green energy initiative. (Who knew you could move a military with solar panels and heavy, fire-prone lithium batteries?)
So, our military isn't serious...and they struggle with recruitment. Would you agree this is a reflection of a broader economic problem? Our institutions and private companies suffer the same derangements. Executive focus is increasingly devoted to DEI, ESG, and climate change. Between early retirements, quiet quitting, and a simple lack of motivation to support those initiatives, my sense is that our productivity is collapsing. A comment I've heard frequently is: "If our executive management isn't serious about the business, why should I be?"

Hi Mark
Last week, your excellent stand in & everyone's Jewish mom, Laura RC, commented that we would be very dull folk if we focused solely on politics & current affairs, so I'm going to ask a different kind of question.
I really enjoyed the story of My Funny Valentine on Song of the Week last month. What a sad figure the talented Larry Hart appears to have been. If I recall correctly he was one of the favourite lyricists of the late Benny Green. I used to listen to his Sunday afternoon shows on the Art of the Songwriter on BBC Radio 2, which ran for the best part of two decades during the 80's & 90's. Clearly you both shared a common passion, so my question is did you ever come into contact with Benny?
In the meantime I must add that for me you have taken Benny's format to a whole other level & you are the perfect one stop media shop for political commentary & musical appreciation. Long may it continue!
All the very best,
John Creasey
