Dear Andrew,
It takes a lot to get this Dutchman to stop sitting on his wallet but the recent needless, heartless death of Sheila Lewis has finally convinced me to join the club.
Earlier this year, there was a conversation between Mark and James Golden on his show discussing the expansion of assisted suicide in Canada. The point was made that Canada has ten times more assisted suicides than California which has a comparable population and legalized the process at about the same time. Although both jurisdictions have similar incentives to kill off the elderly, disabled, or anyone likely to draw on old age, health, or other social benefits, it does not explain why Canada kills ten times more people than California.
Is Canada's higher rate of assisted suicide due to the government monopoly on providing medical health care which is unique among western governments?
Related to this, Sheila Lewis did not take her own life: she effectively had a death sentence pronounced over her by denying her an organ transplant which would have extended her life. This happened simply because she would not take the covid jab. Since she was an Albertan trapped in Canada, there was no private medical alternative in her country without submitting to the groupthink and ideology of the federal and provincial system single healthcare provider.
Mark, I wish you all the best in your recovery. I think your chances are pretty good because as Samuel L Jackson would be forced to say at a Canadian university "You're one tough birthing-person breeder".

How far do you think Trudeau is willing to push the totalitarian schtick before the good people of Canada vote for Anyone But Trudeau?
All the best to you, Mark and the Steyn Online team.

Hi Andrew,
I've long been fascinated by the story of the Mayan culture in Central America. I'm old enough to remember when archaeologists referred to them as being "mostly peaceful", but we've since found out that they were just as warlike and bloodthirsty as the later Aztecs. Researchers continue to be mystified by the sudden collapse of the Mayan civilization, with the population abandoning huge cities in the space of only about a generation. However, aren't we seeing the same thing happening right now in cities like San Francisco, New York, Portland, and so on? When the basics of life support collapse, you have to leave. My worry is that as people abandon large cities and resettle in their rural remote work houses, can we ever have a functional society with people being able to build upon the knowledge of the past? Or will we just have isolated centers of learning dispersed in the hinterland, with a handful of "Hillsdales" filling the role of Irish monasteries during the Dark Ages.

Andrew, Mark said last week that we live in an age where competency is important - hence the inherent dangers of filling highly technical roles with under-qualified people from minority groups to fulfil ESG quotas, rather than "the best man for the job" (and let's face it, it usually is a real, biological man, who may even occasionally be white haha!) - but equally does this not mean that the technocrats are already in charge, and any attempt to wrest power away from them and their "globalist agenda" is doomed to failure? In the modern world, any policy initiative can only be effectively implemented with the cooperation of the deep state.

Here is my view o how the Republican Primary is playing out in the U.S. Nikki Haley is the clear favorite of the RINO establishment. I see her as an eloquent - Kamala counterpart. I once believed that she would be the first woman candidate I would vote for. But, I see she is attached at the bedroom to the Military Industrial Complex and she is the chosen McCain/Romney/Zelden (NY) graceful Loser of the RNC. I will abstain. A strange article released to expose her compromised financial issues and miracle influx of millions of dollars has disqualified her and nullifies her public strong/independent/principled persona. Christie hasn't been censured for his thinly-veiled racist attack on Vivek. Christie is the Straw-Republican, the Archie Bunker designed to paint all Republicans as racist slobs. The RNC has a strategy to lose. They practice it in California, NY and now nationally, and failing to publicly denounce Christie and worse, for Bret Baer to scold the voters publicly for reject him exposed the RNC/FOX Nexus as much as Election Night 2020 has. Pence needs to go away and stop running on Trump's record. It's good for Trump, but it's a waste of our time. It's shameful to watch.

As I understand it from afar, Professor Jordan Petersen is apparently going to be re-educated partly for criticising Justin Trudeau (among other things). You said recently that Canadians aspire to be more progressive than Americans and that is the cause of their extremism (and now their suppression of free speech?) Would you agree with Petersen that they have been too nice or too passive all along - or do most Canadians go along with "re-educating Petersen"?

Hello Andrew.
I was wondering if you caught Ron DeSantis at the first GOP debate? More specifically did you catch his awkwardness while bumbling through a hand-raise question to the gathered politicians about whether any of them would support the GOP nomination of Trump if he were convicted by Democrats (on at least one of their "bulllshit" indictments)? Vivek Ramaswamy threw his hand up without hesitation and was the sole Trump savior until Niki Haley, and finally the entire stage-left (right?), had timidly joined him.
DeSantis never raised his hand, preferring to busily looking down at his notes and then–with the audience roaring approval for Vivek–cocked his head left to right to survey the field before timidly coaxing his hand to slowly rise half-way.
The next day, at the Field of Dreams, Ron DeSantis answered a reporter's question about the juxtaposition of him serenely wafting over the baseball diamond with his son while Trump's Fani Willis hoax indictment arrest was going down. Ron sheepishly winked his way to the camera saying something like, 'I'm glad to be here. I'm glad to be at the Field of Dreams.' And then a sour folding of his arms.
Does this pathetic dude give you any confidence at all...?

Mark,
Donald Trump got royally screwed in the 2020 election. Notwithstanding some of this was self-inflicted by his (and RNC) inaction to fortify proper vote casting. That said, his relentless harkening back to this egregious steal is unproductive and ineffective. Further, his diatribes over RINOS and DeSantis is mostly embarrassing as his base is fully on board (IOW he is preaching to the choir - not changing independent's minds).
Has he surrounded himself with inept advisors in addition to his own bad judgement on how to conduct an election campaign ? Would not hammering Biden policies (borders, economy, inflation, military preparedness) be the simplest and most effective message for his success? Would a bit of a mea culpa over his covid handling further is path to the Whitehouse again ?

I hope that Mark continues to meticulously mend! I hugely appreciate that despite his health challenges, he still posts such quality content such as "Who's Making the Variants?" and "The Danes, Gelded" this week. I welcome Andrew and look forward to more of his quality "Canadian Content."
The Wall Street Journal had a column this week by Daniel Henninger entitled, "The Stupid Party vs. the Evil Party." The sub-headline was, "One of the two parties has no intention of losing..."
The main point of his article was that the Republicans would be dumb to nominate Trump because Trump won't be able to win in the general election and because the Democrats will pull the plug on Biden. Mr. Henninger seems to think that the ceiling on Trump's support is too low and that the Democrats can get "just enough" support to win for whoever they do run. However, I think the evil machinations of the Democrats are quantum level above this thinking.
I think that there's a risk that the US electorate could not even get the opportunity to vote for Trump. This is because of the recent "14th Amendment" trope that's circulating. At first, I was dismissive of this, but now I see evil genius in it.
The 14th amendment argument is that Trump is ineligible to run because of this amendment's "insurrection clause." That is, Trump can't run because he incited an insurrection on January 6th. It won't matter that no court has ruled on this. Rather, various blue state/swing state Secretaries of State and other election officials will solemnly intone that, "We've given the amendment deep and serious study, and have concluded that indeed Mr. Trump is not eligible to run for our Highest Office, so we're not even going to put him on the ballot." If you Google it, you can already see this being discussed.
Trump can try to fight this in the court, but good luck with getting that process to play out in time, and that's assuming he wins. So, effectively no due process for him, and no real choice for the country. I'm astounded!
My questions:
(1) Do you think the Democrats could really be so brazen as to try this scheme?
(2) If they do it, do you think that the country will put up with it?
Thanks for considering my comments here.

Greetings Andrew, no sooner had I attempted to pronounce the new name of Minneapolis' beautiful Lake Calhoun (purportedly it is now Bde Maka Ska -- wasn't that a 1989 Eurovision entry?), than I learned that, as of this summer, the great Fort Benning is now Fort Moore, Fort Bragg is now Fort Liberty, and Foot Hood is now Fort Cazavos, among other revisions. The Pentagon apparently implemented these changes on the recommendation of a Congressional Naming Committee, which passed with a super-majority over Trump's veto -- meaning most Republican senators voted in favor of these changes.
I believe it was Milton Friedman who said the goal is not to elect the right politicians, but to set the cultural conditions so that the wrong politicians do the right thing. The left has adapted that advice quite well to its objectives, why can't the right?
