Dear Mark,
There has been much discussion in the MSC about the problem of whether to start a 3rd party or try to reform the Republican Party from within. Apparently, former President Trump is opting for the latter. He has promised to "primary" RINOs and endorse MAGA supporters. What do you think are the prospects for success? It seems to me that the inevitable outcome will be a war between the McConnell-Romney wing of the Republican party (they are numerous and they control the resources) and the MAGA supporters, most of whom have no deep institutional connection to the Republican Party. The end result will be a split and either a de facto 3rd Party, or the disenfranchisement of a sizeable fraction of the "Republican" electorate. Wouldn't it be easier to make the break now and market a 3rd party than to try to play the "not that Republican, this Republican" game two and four years from now?

Personally, I think things like this are why the conservative movement needs to jettison the Republican Party and set up a new party. The contemporary Republican Party starts out in "historic tax cut" that nets most people a few hundred dollars a year and ends up with Hank Paulson on a knee begging Nancy Pelosi for yet another in a Never ending series of corporate bail outs. It talks about small government, but says nothing when COVID lockdowns restrict virtually every constitutional liberty. It's four years and counting on the Durham report while the Biden Administration indicts someone for posting memes on the 2016 election.

Will he be able to perform something more demanding in the long run? The assumptions (in the script) were that he would leave the presidental chair to Mrs Harris in a short period of time. Will he? Obama is still behind the curtains...

Mark: No one respects you more than I do. But I beg to differ re encouraging Trump supporters to form a third party. Soros, Pelosi, and Schumer would love that.
Trump succeeded by growing the GOP base, not by reducing the Dem base—solid even in red states. In general elections, one must win a plurality. Only GA and LA have general election runoffs. I don't know how splinter parties win seats in the Parliament or Knesset, but they don't win anything here.
They are spoilers, e.g., the Libertarians (quietly supported by Soros types?). By draining off GOP leaners, a large Lib. vote in 2016 (plus Kristol-stooge McMullin) cost Trump 4 states (NH, MN, NV, ME) and maybe NM, where Lib. drew 11%.
In 2020, Trump lost the electoral college by 42,844 votes (officially) in AZ, GA, WI. That's 269-269. Trump wins in House with 29-30 state delegations, one vote each. A Lib. on the ballot probably cost Trump all 3 states:
State Biden margin Lib. votes
AZ 10,457 51,465
GA 11,779 62,229
WI 20,608 38,490
No Lib. and Trump needs only ~60% of these voters to win. [Note to Libertarians: Neither Ron or Rand Paul ever won anything as a Libertarian, but only by running as Republicans.] In Nov., Perdue missed avoiding a runoff by 0.3%. The Lib. got 2.3%. No Lib. candidate and GOP still controls the Senate. Filibuster safe. No Supreme Court packing, D.C. statehood, or election-rigging HR 1.
I get the frustration with the McConnells and Ryans, but the Party does not belong to them. It belongs to the 74.2 M Trump voters, who would be crazy to cede the GOP election infrastructure to the RINOs. The Tea Party got this. Instead of forming a third party, they ran in GOP primaries and voted GOP in the fall. In 2010, the GOP gained 63 House seats and Gingrich as Speaker.
Reagan asked rhetorically in 1975: "Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?" The Nation is on the brink. Conservatives/populists don't have decades to build a new party competitive with Dems. About 90% of Republicans backed Trump, even if squeamish.
Pressure GOP to resist Biden as Dems resisted Trump and clean up election procedures. Run electable primary challengers to Liz Cheney, et al. Turn out GOP vote in 2022. Pressure GOP winners to keep resisting until 2024. Win back WH with Trumpian GOP nominee. Not easy, but the only way.

Certainly too it does not support the anxious media claims that Trump lied.

Mark, you've talked about the superiority of simple paper ballots, hand counted where they're cast. Nolo contendere.
But even though you've lived in New Hampshire for decades, I wonder if you're carrying over too much from your Canadian experience, wherein an election consists of a **single** race: the choice of the MP for a provincial or federal riding. (To clarify for non-Canadians, that's one or the other, **not both**. I checked with James Fulford, editor at VDARE. James lives in Toronto.)
But in U.S. elections, there can easily be a dozen candidate races on the ballot as well as ballot questions.
(e.g. In Montana, besides the presidential, U.S. senator, and congressional rep races, we just elected governor, attorney general, secretary of state, superintendent of public instruction, regional member of the Public Service Commission, state legislators, some local officials, plus we voted on several ballot questions.)
In principle, you could go to a separate piece of paper for each contest, but I think the resulting blizzard of paper would likely yield chaos that might well be as fraught as what we're stuck with now.
So, regarding your recommended elections regime, am I missing something obvious?
